I’m an amateur florist, and I’ve been disappointed that some of my flowers, even ones bought fresh from the market, only last a few days, despite flower food and listerine and changing water and cutting stems at an angle. Then I spray them with a chemical wilt-retardant. What am I missing?

I believe there used to be flowers there because there’s a decorative brick border around the area but it’s overrun with weeds and there are no flowers there now. I received a Christmas cactus about 2 1/2 weeks ago with some buds just starting and some buds almost all the way open. Since then, most of the flowers have bloomed beautifully, but about a week after the flower blooms, the flower itself starts to wilt and shrivel. Is this normal? The rest of the plant looks healthy, it’s just the flowers that are starting to shrivel up after blooming. If this is normal, should I pinch off the wilting flowers or just leave it alone?

I kinda like her, but don’t want too be to assertive and such, what kind of flowers should I buy? I was kinda thinking orange/reddish roses, but I think just red seems way too strong.
