It is well known that it is not sufficient for a good ranking to just have an optimized website for the keywords. More important are links from other sites to your site. There are several types of links and it is always good to understand a little bit about it.
If you find a site with witch you want to exchange links contact the webmaster and offer him a link from your site. You get a backlink pointing from his website to your site if he agrees. Those links are reciprocal links or Two Way Links. You should make sure that you get links from related sites, it will be better appreciated by Google. By the way a Two Way Link is not very important for a good ranking in Google, sure it is still better than no link. Google likes One Way Links. Thats a link pointing from the other website to your site, and you don’t link back to the other website. You can get such links from web directories. But they contribute less and less to a good ranking. Because they are very related, One Way Links from your competitors would be again the best. You sure have problems to find someone who gives you a link for nothing in return.
But if you have two partners B and C, you can proceed differently. You (A) link to B and B doesn’t link back to you (that would be reciprocal) he links to C. C then links to A. Everybody gets an incoming link, but for which there is no direct outgoing link. All are linked in a triangle: A -> B -> C -> A.
